How We Started

Denise Swanick
Founder of Ballina Dragons Meitheal Abhainn (2023)

Ballina Dragons was born out of my grief journey. My sister Carmel was in need of a lung & heart transplant but that was not to happen for her and she passed in 2022. I needed to do something to use this grief in a positive way. I was on the Quay and saw the Rowing Club on the river when inspiration hit. I thought ‘What about a dragon boat?’

On 8th May 2023 I shared my idea with my friends on Facebook and to my surprise people responded with great enthusiasm. Ballina Dragons Meitheal Abhainn was born. The people of Ballina & Mayo trusted and supported the dream.”

I believes that everyone has something to offer throughout life’s journey. Life can throw challenges at us that might shake our confidence. It’s at these times we need our family, friends and community. In the words of President Mary Robinson:

Somebody who seems strong is not always strong. There are moments when one can be weak and need the friendship of friends and their support.

This concept was the foundations for our values & ethos.

I am a proud citizen of Ballina with deep family roots in Doona Ballycroy, Ballina and Co. Mayo. I believes in paying forward for all the blessings in my life. I am an active volunteer and advocate for social inclusion and justice.
