Why Paddling

Ballina Dragons Meitheal Abhainn is a volunteer-led group providing a unique holistic and ecological approach to healing all levels of our well-being with a specific focus on those affected by cancer treatments, life-limiting conditions and supporters, through the sport of Dragon Boating.

Dragon boating is not just about physical fitness & mental wellbeing —it’s a colourful, dynamic sport that brings people together.

  • Cardiovascular Endurance: Paddling engages large muscle groups, improving cardiovascular fitness and endurance.
  • Strength and Toning: The repetitive upper body movement strengthens arms, shoulders, and core muscles.
  • Low Impact: Unlike high-impact sports, dragon boating is gentle on joints.
  • Team Spirit: Being part of a synchronised team fosters camaraderie and boosts mental health.
  • Stress Relief: The rhythmic paddling motion and connection with water provide relaxation.
  • Sense of Achievement: Completing training and regattas enhances self-esteem and confidence.
  • Breast & All Cancer Survivors: We priorities Breast Cancer Survivors and All Cancer Survivors. Paddling helps improve physical and psychological well-being.
  • Technique Matters: Proper paddling technique is crucial for success.

If you wish to join, we will offer you an Introductory Programme.
